Some good single players games.

Post by Sixthy »

I'm looking for a good single player game for just about any platform, but PC preferred. What I'm hoping for is something along the lines of like Morrowind / Oblivion - an RPG with a lot of character development (gearing up, etc).

Don't be afraid to list something that seems obvious, because I might not have thought about it!

Thanks. :)

If you dont mind scifi and 3rd person RPG's you could try;

Mass Effect
Knights of the Old Republic (Star wars)
Knights of the Old Republic 2 (Star Wars)
Neverwinter Nights + its 3 expacks (dnd)
Neverwinter Nights 2 +2 expacks (i think its 2) (dnd)

Then there are some good "platformer" type games,

The 3 prince of persia games were all really well done
Assassin's Creed was also a fun game

Call of Duty 4 had a really well done solo campaign if you wanna go with fps
Deus Ex and Deus Ex: Invisible War were 2 well done fps, that also had some rpd elements to them.

A new 3rd person shooter called Mercenaries 2 comes out on the 31st which looks like it could be well done.

Thats all i can think of right now
Bye-Bye

Nice - nice - keep them coming! I need to find a game to play during the day!

I loved the first Neverwinter nights and its expansions, but I never played 2. Sometimes I can handle Sci-fi type stuff, but I don't really want to play KOTOR. Don't know why, just don't!

Thanks so far!

Anything else?

Quite a few good games are coming out. Mirror's Edge, Spore and Fallout 3. These are all PC titles if I remember correct. Also can try The Witcher another pretty good single player computer game.

Shining force is indeed amazing for the genesis, never did manage to beat the second one though ;/

Typically when I am looking for a good single player experience I'll fire up a SNES or Genesis emulator. Here are some RPG's which will most likely be very obvious, but as you stated, I'll point them out anyways!

Super Mario RPG
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy 4,5,6
Secret of Mana
Seiken Densetsu 2
E.V.O. Search for Eden
Terranigma

Besides the obvious Square/Squarenix rpg's which are all quite lovely:
Earthbound (!!!!!)
Soulblazer / Illusion of Gaia / Terranigma series are fun too

If you don't mind some dated graphics (ala 1997-8 tiny sprites), the entire Baldur's Gate from Black Isle is frakkin' amazing for pure story and explorability. And despite the second being entirely playable as a standalone, you can import your character from Tales into Shadows to play through the trilogy- think I 'wasted' about ~150-200 hours on the four while in undergrad. There's also a lot of fan-made mods that you can use to tweak the game, whether it be fixes to some minor designer oversights, make the end-game fights damned near impossible, or pick up a few of the party members for an *ahem* interesting evening. :-D

Baldur's Gate
Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal

Same graphics-style and publisher, but much faster plays are Icewind Dale/Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter (another D&D setting), Planescape: Torment, and Fallout/Fallout 2 (post-apocalyptic/nuclear setting).

Edit: The BG/ID games are single-player, but it's strategic team-based combat, either real-time or turn-based depending on your preference. Can't speak as to Fallout as I've failed at being a die-hard RPGer and not played either. >.<

Oh, and if you're looking for an awesome plot (don't know why Square tried to pass off one that would make Shakespeare proud to the little kiddies) and strategic, turn-based action, nothing can beat Final Fantasy Tactics, imo.

Originally for the PS1, that's the only version I've played. Can probably find it online for an emulator or whatnot, and don't know what's been changed for FFT: Advance or whatever they called the re-release.

Simply an amazing rpg. Maybe the best i've played. Close between that and Final Fantasy 6.

The sequel was also really good. Chrono Cross for ps1

I'm currently playing Crysis. It's really really pretty, but even on the hardest setting, it's pretty easy. They give you a silenced AK variant with a scope. CS beta 5 all over again. It has some MGS noise/sneaking around elements, so it's at least a little different from your usual 'AMFG kill everything' FPS. Enemy AI is decent.

I know you said single player, but there's always good ole CS 1.6. Nothing like a 12 pack, vent and 1deaging keeds. Something about a real person on the receiving end always did it for me

I'm also looking for stuff, but haven't really seen anything that piqued my interest. I was hoping Crysis would do it, but I'm back to square one.
