You don't actually lose the exp when you zone, your UI just sets it to 0. Thats why if you kill something again, it will seem like you got 3 yellows or w/e. In reality you only got half a blue, its just the UI gets sent the command "update my exp bar". This command is not being sent when you zone, so it looks like you have none.
