That is really bad, but do you know what step this is in the quest. I am only on the first step and was going to work on it this weekend. Should I just do something else?

it's the last step. Feasibly you can get the key, but if he dies, you or anyone else can't do it for another 6 hours.

And he now can solo all the guards, so you can do this solo as long as you don't release when you die (cause you will die solo) ;p.
