I like your style

Post by Davin »

Hello there Vis Maior,

This may seem odd...but I heard of your guild through http://www.worldofraids.com and http://www.mmo-champion.com, and in my off-time I thought I'd check your website out, and I really like the layout and design.

I've recently become interested in web design, so I was wondering what programs/coding you guys used to format this site. I especially like the banner at the top of the page, and how it changes as you navigate the site. The live feed you guys have is especially interesting, and I was wondering how you guys pulled that off as well.

Again, really random I know, just curious. A lot of the the guilds on my server have bland website designs and I found yours to be pretty cool.

Thanks,

Davin/Cammy

thanks!

The website is a combined effort between many past and present guild members and friends. The website redesign including banner graphics and layout was done by myself this past summer with photoshop, wowmodelviewer, and screenshots from in game. I'm probably going to go for another site redesign this summer once I find the time to update things for Sunwell and WoTLK, we shall see.

I believe either Bleedo or Amerle enabled the randomized banners on refresh.

The live feed was provided by Mysticfox with the help of UStream, a free streaming service.

Ah thats awesome! :D Do you recommend any tutorial sites/books for photoshop or web design? I don't manage my guild's website, but I think it could be organized better and I'd like to work with my GM on it.

Thanks again!

The best way to learn in my opinion is just to fool around with things until you figure it out. I don't really learn all that well when people tell me what to do, but maybe thats just me.

I find that sketching and conceptualizing is key, if you try to jump right into something without an idea of what its function is, and how it makes the most sense to be laid out, It'll probably end up as a total failure.

4 years of college for design probably helps too =P

I designed the entire website myself.

aus is a flaming homosexual, and as you can see, there is no pink incorporated in the design, so he is obviously lying.

Crypts skin color is pink. Also a slight bit on Kolds ears and under his eyes.

That was me, and bleedo improved it. Using random (rand() is super easy. Say you have 3 banners, just get an integer from 1-3 and make the image link to banner + rand() + .jpg. There are more complicated "nicer" ways to do it, but it's always better to get started somewhere and learn along the way.
